Nix South Carolina Senate Bill 1306 and House Bill 3114

south_carolina_callout_v2_220x200
Transgender people and reproductive rights are under attack in South Carolina! Two extremely dangerous bills, Senate Bill (S) 1306 and House Bill (H) 3114 could soon become law, and we need to stop both of them.

S 1306, introduced on Tuesday May 17, attacks the ability of transgender students in Berkeley County to use facilities that match their gender identity. Transgender people regularly face harassment and violence in those settings.

To make things worse, also on Tuesday the South Carolina legislature passed H 3114, which bans abortion at 20 weeks post-fertilization, with no exceptions in case of rape or incest. This bill is unconstitutional and violates guaranteed protections afforded by Roe v. Wade. Lesbian and bisexual women and transgender people need access to comprehensive reproductive health care including abortion, and we cannot allow our opposition to undermine this basic right. This bill is now headed to Governor Nikki Haley's desk.

Please tell South Carolina legislators and Governor Haley to reject S 1306 and H 3114, laws that make a mockery of bodily autonomy and self-determination, which are rights that we hold dear in South Carolina and the United States.

NIX SOUTH CAROLINA BILLS S 1306 AND H 3114 NOW!

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am strongly opposed to South Carolina Senate Bill (S) 1306 and House Bill (H) 3114. Both of these bills harm the LGBTQ community by targeting transgender people with discrimination and by taking away reproductive health options from women and transgender people.

S 1306, which would stop transgender people in Berkeley County School District from using public restrooms, locker rooms, and shower rooms, would make transgender and gender non-conforming people more vulnerable to increased levels of bullying, harassment, and physical and sexual assault.

H 3114 would ban abortion at 20 weeks post-fertilization, with no exceptions in case of rape or incest--the only exception is in case of a medical emergency. This law is unnecessary, dangerous, and unconstitutional.

I urge you to reject both S 1306 and H 3114. Both bills make a mockery of bodily autonomy and self-determination, which are rights that we hold dear in South Carolina and the United States.

Sincerely,
